The cup’s decoration draws inspiration from the style of interior spaces of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague (UPM) following the design of the building’s architect Josef Schulz. The décor throughout the rooms is unique, as the motifs are not repeated. As in his architecture, Schulz drew on the motifs of Renaissance buildings and the repertoire of ornamentation – especially French and Italian – to be found here. Similar motifs can also be found in his other interiors at the National Museum and Rudolfinum. The UPM structure was built in 1897–1900. Josef Schulz was a talented Czech architect, designer, pedagogue and restorer. In addition to the structure, he designed the entire architectonic decoration and interior furnishings, including the furniture, lights, fittings and stained-glass work. He was involved in the monumental sculptural and stucco decoration of his structures. He designed glassware and tableware as well as jewellery patterns. He was involved in the interior decoration of Villa Lanna in Prague, which was built for the family of industrialist Adalbert Lanna in 1872.
This porcelain cup, designed for the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague was named after this significant Czech entrepreneur, collector and patron of the arts.
